SAMSUNG NX 1

Samsung has been pretty inventive in the digital camera world. It was the first to offer an really extensive Wi-Fi system (which continues to this day), Android-based cameras (though Nikon launched a model at about the same time), and arguably the first dedicated 'selfie cams' with its DualView models.
The company has yet again come up with something new, this time in the enthusiast mirrorless space. For the first time ever, Samsung has managed to create an APS-C-sized, 28MP CMOS sensor that's backside illuminated. BSI sensors move all the circuitry behind the light-capturing part of the sensor which allows it to capture more light, improving low light performance and reducing noise. Until now, the largest sensor with backside illumination was 1"-type (around 1/3rd the size of APS-C).
The NX1 sits in a crowded field of excellent cameras - both DSLR and mirrorless - such as the Nikon D7200, Canon EOS 7D Mark II, Panasonic DMC-GH4 and Fujifilm X-T1. Each of these models has its own appeal, whether it be the excellent video specification of the Panasonic, the compactness of the Fujifilm or the all-round capability of the Nikon. While they share similar price tags and build quality and aim for broadly the same audience, the NX1 has quite a few tricks up its sleeve beyond its clever sensor, to try to break into that respectable club.

Samsung NX1 key features

  • 28.2 megapixel APS-C BSI-CMOS sensor
  • Hybrid AF system with 205 phase-detect points covering 90% of the frame
  • 15 fps burst shooting with continuous autofocus
  • 4K (DCI 4K & UHD) video recording using H.265 codec
  • Can output 4:2:2 8-bit 4K video over HDMI
  • Stripe pattern AF illuminator with 15m range
  • Weather-resistant magnesium alloy body
  • Context-sensitive adaptive noise reduction
  • 3" tilting Super AMOLED touchscreen display
  • 2.36M dot OLED EVF with 5ms lag
  • LCD info display on top of camera
  • Built-in 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • USB 3.0 interface
  • Optional battery grip
Those specification highlights should give you an idea of Samsung's ambitions for this camera: not only does it feature the largest BSI sensor we've ever seen but also the highest pixel count on that format. Just as importantly, it incorporates one of the most extensive on-sensor phase detection systems we've seen. This, along with the magnesium alloy body and top-plate LCD info display, makes it clear that Samsung wants its NX system to compete with the best APS-C models on the market. As you can see, there are some features that have never been seen before on an enthusiast ILC, such as the sensor, 802.11ac Wi-Fi and use of the more efficient H.265 codec. The AF illuminator has a stripe pattern which allows for its long reach, although Sony did something similar with their Hologram AF feature many years ago.
The quad-core DRIMe V processor (derived from the Exynos SoCs Samsung uses in its high-end smartphones) is capable of cranking out giant 28 megapixel images at 15 fps, recording two different flavors of ultra high resolution video, and reducing EVF lag to almost nothing. The camera has a new autofocus system (NX AF System III) which the company says is the fastest on the market. It combines 209 contrast detection and 205 cross-type phase detect points that cover 90% of the frame.
The body of the camera goes for about three hundred and seventy eight thousand naira plus.

THE HUNT FOR THE SAUDI RUBBISH GIRL

After a sharply dressed Saudi man mocked a young migrant picking through rubbish, others rushed to try to find the girl and give her money.
The young man stopped to take a selfie in front of an African migrant picking through rubbish in Jeddah. He spotted that the young girl, maybe about 10 years old, was wearing a shirt displaying the logo of the al-Ittihad football team, and saw the opportunity for a quick joke.
"Look at where al-Ittihad is, in the bin," the man wrote underneath the photo on the image-sharing app Snapchat.
The image was then taken off Snapchat and widely shared on other social networks, as well as reported in the media. Not many people found it funny. The overwhelming sentiment online was outrage and anger: people who saw the picture thought it was in poor taste, even racist, and that the man was using a poor child as a prop.
"It's a publicity stunt, poor girl doesn't even know what's going on, he's pathetic,"

Colorado High School Student Sets Self on Fire in Cafeteria

A student at a suburban Denver high school set himself on fire in the school's cafeteria today and is in critical condition, authorities said.
A female teacher was treated for minor cuts when she broke a pane of glass to access a fire extinguisher and a school custodian used the extinguisher to put the fire out, Westminster Police Investigator Cheri Spottke told ABC News.
The student, who is 16 but otherwise not identified, is in critical condition with severe burns, Spottke said.
The incident happened at 7:12 a.m. in the cafeteria of Standley Lake High School in Westminster, Colo. Police said students were present in the cafeteria at the time, but none were injured.
The school released a statement saying in part, "A student sustained severe burns when he entered the school cafeteria and lit himself on fire. The student has been transported to an area hospital and is in critical condition. Our hearts and prayers go out the family and school community."
"At this time we do believe that this was a suicide attempt," Spottke said.
Investigators do not know why the boy set himself on fire, and are talking to his friends, school employees and his parents for clues, Spottke said. They are also reviewing surveillance video from inside the school cafeteria, police said.
Police would not comment on whether the boy said anything before lighting himself on fire, or if he had doused himself in gasoline or any other accelerant.
Spottke told ABC News affiliate KMGH, "We don't know of any threats ahead of time at this point but that's something that we're looking into obviously-social media and that type of stuff we're looking at to see if there were any threats made."
She added, "We're taking the most precautionary measures. Nowadays with everything that happens in these schools, we're going to go through the entire school- room by room, floor by floor, to make sure there's not any other devices or anything like that."
School is closed today and Tuesday, and counselors are being brought in to help, police said.
Today's incident was the latest to affect a Denver-area school in recent weeks.
On Thursday, Columbine High School, where two gunmen killed 13 people in 1999, went on high security alert after receiving a series of threatening phone calls. The alert applied to a half-dozen other schools in the area, in the same school district as Standley Lake, but was lifted the same day.
On Dec. 13, student gunman Karl Pierson, 17, fatally shot Claire Davis, a 17-year-old classmate at Arapahoe High School in Centennial before killing himself in the school's library. Pierson reportedly had threatened a teacher and librarian who had disciplined him last year and allegedly was seeking that teacher when he entered the school, investigators have said.
Westminster was home to 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway, who was abducted on her way to school and killed in 2012. Austin Sigg, who was 17 at the time of the crime, was sentenced to a life sentence plus 86 years. Jessica's disappearance put Westminster and neighboring Denver suburbs on edge as police, aided by an army of volunteers, searched for her and then her killer.

Beyonce's Sexy, Revealing Grammys Dress Was a Size 2!

The pressure was on for "Project Runway" winner Michael Costello heading into the Grammys this past Sunday.
He wasn't just making anyone's dress, he was making Beyonce's dress - you know, that super revealing one.
"We didn't have any of her sizes or measurements," he told E! News. "The dress was just made to fit a sample mannequin. It's smaller than a size 4. She is tiny! That dress is at least a 2/4. She looks amazing. I just love the way it all came together. Ty [Beyonce's stylist] knew it was going to fit."
What! Beyonce's stylist went on gut instinct and just assumed the dress would fit? Apparently he had the fitting the day of the show on Sunday.

Withdrawal of Parliamentary Support does not in any way threaten democracy’- GOV. FASHOLA

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Monday lent his weight to the directives of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to all its National Assembly representatives to block all federal government legislations, stating that the withdrawal of support by parliamentary representative from the executive does not in any way threaten democracy.
The Governor who spoke in an interview with newsmen after handing over the Ajao Estate/Ejigbo Link Bridge in Ejigbo, said rather than threaten democracy, it indeed will strengthen it.
“It strengthens democracy because whenever people have raised their voices at a point where they have no alternatives, instead of resorting to violence they are resorting to a legitimate tool to bring the executive to the table to say let us talk, we must have a negotiated compromise in order to go forward”.
“If you close that, then you are setting the expressway to anarchy. It is a legitimate tool, the Americans have used it, the British have used it when it suited them in the absence of any evidence to the contrary, they told their government at a time to invade Iraq and when it did not suit them, in a spirit of non- cooperation to the government of the day which was a coalition, they said you cannot go to Syria”, he added.
The Governor noted the interest which the subject matter has generated and some of the comments that have been made especially by the Peoples Democratic Party’s information management mechanism, which showed that there is a lot of learning about the democratic process that they still need to do.
